Astronomy

Astronomy is a fascinating lifetime hobby enjoyed by young children to centenarians, by people from all walks of life and with varied interests.

You can observe or photograph the heavens on a casual or serious basis, undertake scientific study or marvel at the wonderment of our existence.

Astronomy can be a fun and relaxing way to soothe our minds and bodies from our hectic everyday life. It is a way to enjoy nature, being outside and marveling at the night sky.

I developed my interest in astronomy back in the seventies with a small telescope I built myself, and enjoyed it for many years.

About two years ago I bought a larger scope to try some astrophotography. I try to get out about two to three nights a week in my back yard, and I go to local star parties two times a month to help others learn and enjoy the skies. Some people that come to star parties can’t see stars from the big cities they live in and they end up staying for hours looking at the planets and galaxies from a nice dark site.

Arizona is well known around the world for it’s clear, dark skies. Kitt Peak is located just west of Tucson, Mt. Hopkins to the south and Mt. Graham tot eh east, with some of the largest telescopes used by professional astronomers and universities from around the world.
Southwest Trekking works with Pat Heiman in presenting to clients the education, enrichement and enjoyment that studying the night skies has to offer. Pat has been an amatuer astronomer for several years and has been studying the night skies many a dark and sometimes cold evening.
